Why should newborns wear organic clothes?

Why should newborns wear organic clothes?

As parents, we hope our children to grow up healthy and happily, and the increase of eczema, spots, diaper rash and other allergies got us worried. Some studies find that clothing is one of the most important factors for skin allergies and the harmful residual chemicals on the clothes may cause skin irritation.

Furthermore, many parents notice that organic clothing that have not been processed with chemicals, are likely reduce the chance of skin allergies.

More than 8,000 chemicals in your clothes

Planting cotton requires more pesticide than other crops as cotton alone uses 16% of the world’s pesticides. From planting to manufacturing a piece of cotton cloth uses more than 8,000 different chemicals, including pesticides, herbicides, bleaches and dyes. Some chemicals (such as Aldicarb) are neurotoxins which are harmful to human health or may cause cancer.

Baby clothes, which contain brighter colours, undergo extensive chemical bleaching processes to achieve such vibrancy. This also applies to white clothing. Some chemicals, such as fluorescent agents, may even remain in the clothes. These can cause allergic reactions and skin care problems among babies.

Large amount of pesticides can cause serious damage to the ecosystem of nearby houses and rivers, or even entire areas.

Newborn babies are more sensitive

Because newborn babies’ skin is delicate and sensitive, they are less tolerant to chemicals compared to adults. Newborns are more likely to absorb heavy metals and other harmful chemicals residual on their clothes.

Newborns need to sleep for more than 16 hours. As conventional clothes contain large amount of harmful chemical, the chance for newborns to absorb harmful chemicals from their clothes is much higher.

What is organic farming?

Organic farming works in harmony with nature rather than against it. It seeks to provide a sustainable farming model whilst respecting the natural life-cycle systems. The seeds are not genetically modified and no harmful chemicals are used on the plantation.

Organic cottons are required to be certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The certificate oversees the entire process from the seed to the production. Prohibited chemical synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides and practices must not be used on certified organic farms for at least three years prior to harvest of the certified organic products.

Also the organic cottons must be treated separately from the non-organic in the farm to ensure that they are not contaminated.
